LPD wasn't allowing connections
26 July 2005 @ 00:30 BST
by Paul

Recently upgraded the software on a computer as I use as a print server. Yet it wasn't printing. I could ping the machine. I could ssh to it, so I knew it was working. But I couldn't telnet to port 515.

What was wrong was in the config file /etc/default/lpd. It had the line:

This stops the lpd daemon from listening on any ports. Commenting this line out fixed the problem.
